Persija Jakarta
Persija (Persatuan Sepakbola Indonesia Jakarta) is an Indonesian football club from Jakarta. It is one of Indonesia’s most successful clubs. The club’s patron is Sutiyoso, the governor of Jakarta until 2007. Ironically, it was under his tenure that Persija’s historic Stadium Menteng was bulldozed to construct a parking lot and cafe precinct. Persija is also known for its fanatical supporters (Jakmania).
History
Persija Jakarta was formed in 1928 as VIJ Jakarta. The club changed its name to Persija Jakarta in 1964. The club plays some big matches at the Bung Karno Stadium.
Supporters
Persija Jakarta’s supporters call themselves the Jakmanias. They are amongst Indonesia’s most passionate and fanatical supporters. Unfortunately, they have a slight reputation for being violent, as evidenced at the 2004/2005 Liga Indonesia final against Persipura Jayapura. Persija lost the match 2-3 and the Jakmanias soon turned violent after the match, demonstrating their feelings and venting their anger by ravaging the Bung Karno Stadium.
